Book Tag meme [Aug. 30th, 2014|03:37 pm]

Thanks to andrewducker - doing this while I'm dog-sitting.

List 10 books that have stayed with you in some way. Don't take more than a few minutes and do not think too hard. They do not have to be the "right" books or great works of literature, just ones that have affected you in some way. Nominate 10 friends.

(As I never use LJ these days, no point in nominating. If you read this and like the idea, go for it!)

Books

The Colour of Magic (my first Pratchett, loaned to me at Uni)
Shadow the Sheepdog (classic Blyton, stayed with me through childhood)
Ladyhawke (Classic fantasy, possibly my first!)
The Belgariad
The Stand
Necromancer
Aurian
The Hobbit
Less Than Zero
Taliesin

Comics

Transmetropolitan
Rising Stars
The Sandman
The Killing Joke
ASM #300 (I was lucky enough to pick this up from a newsagent when I was twelve)
Preacher
Barry Windsor Smith's Weapon X, serialised in Marvel Comics Presents, which I am lucky to have too
Strangers In Paradise
The Authority
An issue of Batman where Bruce Wayne takes some boys camping, and they all speculate on what Batman is like. Probably one of the earliest comics I read.

And many, many more!

Edited to add: a different Uni friend loaned me "The Authoritative Calvin & Hobbes", which had a profound effect on me. It would be wrong to omit that. Calvin & Hobbes can still move me in a way few other writings can.

'Twas Con's 6th Birthday today.

The overwhelming emotion is pride. He's growing into exactly the sort of kid I want him to be - exemplified by a phone call from my brother tonight, when unprompted, Connor first asked to speak with "Auntie Debi" (my bro's better half), and the proceeded to thank her "very much" for his present from them both.

Debi, having only been seeing my bro' for just over a year, and having met Con maybe half a dozen times if you're lucky, was completely made up by this.

And he's just that type of kid. Is he mischevious? Yes. Does he get into trouble at school? Yes. Does he let us down occasionally? Yes. But overall, he has a big heart, a lot of kindness and consideration, and a constant happiness and joie de vivre that makes him a pleasure to be around.

I love him.

Been a very tiring week, for one reason or another.

Am very sleepy.

Have caught up on friends-posts, and the frankly bizarre Open Source Boobies Project debacle.

Geez - can't take my eyes of you guys for a second, can I?

Now behave - I'm off for some slee..... Zzzzzzzz.

[listening to |Oh, load and loads and loads]

My new toys arrived today.

They fill a gap I've had in my listening capabilities - the laptop's speakers are woefully under-powered and tinny, and because I've got a significant portion of my favourite songs on a couple of portable MP3 players too, I've been lacking a way to inflict them upon share these with others till now.

I wanted something small enough to be able to move from room to room (and to take to other places, UK holidays etc), but big enough to pack enough punch to fill a medium-sized room.

Do they fit the bill?

Hell, yeah. I'd read various reviews of course, so I was hopeful, but I'm always a little nervous buying things unseen (or unheard). However, out of the box, these little beauties were singing, and after leaving them running alone for an hour, and then going back to tweak the volume, they blew me away. I admit, they're not fantastic for bass, but then I wasn't expecting too much from a 2.0 active speaker set-up. Still, they're absolutely perfect for what I need them for.

Highly recommended.

[listening to |BSG - Season 4 - w00t!]

OK, after Andy's comment, I had a quick glance back to see what I've written about my daughter.

Uhm, not much. I really need to rectify that!

I have a daughter, Amber. She's 3 next month. Apple of her father's eye.

Also, for those of you who were reading all those weeks ago and have been waiting with baited breath ever since, you will be pleased to know I pulled my techie finger out, and got my home network sorted. Laptop can see (new) PC, (new) PC can see laptop, both can see and stream to XBox 360 (oh yeah, I got one of those), which is pretty cool, if only for watching family photo slide shows via Media Centre.

I almost feel like I should work in IT or something.

Am just about recovered from a bout of flu / cold / virus, otherwise known as man-flu, the deadliest thing known to those of us from Mars.

Amber was sick yesterday too, so I had the added bonus of not only being incapable of looking after myself (it was MAN-FLU), but being incapable of keeping up with her. When I say she was unwell, I mean she had a fever, cough, and unremitting snot. In all other aspects, she was her usual self, by which I mean an unstoppable dervish of fun and mischief.

It was, actually, a really fun day.

As a further bonus (I know, just how lucky am I?), the implementation my team had on Monday night was canned. As I was at home on Tuesday, they didn't want to disturb me, and so they had the implementation on Tuesday night without me. Result.

And now, on with the Old Firm game....

[listening to |nothing. It's off!]

An interesting insight into my viewing habits - here's everything my Sky+ planner has recored for me while I've been too busy to watch TV this week.

(Also, please note, there will be the creation of a new day between Saturday and Sunday soon, so that I can watch all the TV I'm addicted to.)

(Also, please note, I do try to make my TV viewing productive. For example, you should SEE the pile of ironing I have to do tomorrow. Or the pile of tag-less MP3s I have to tag... ;+)

Anyway:

Chuck
Damages
The Wire
It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia
Kevin Hill
Bionic Woman
Moonlight
Nip/Tuck
Reaper
The Kill Point
The Big Bang Theory
American Idol 2008
Bones
Gossip Girl
Cane
Boston Legal
My Name Is Earl
Entourage

with:

Dirty Sexy Money
Criminal Minds
Pushing Daisies
Desperate Housewives
and Brothers & Sisters

before it all starts over again.

Ahem.

No, now that I've listed that, it's not embarrassing at all....
